We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Orthopedic Surgeon (MD/DO) to join our dedicated Indian Health Service (IHS) team at Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC) in Gallup, New Mexico. In this role, you will provide comprehensive orthopedic surgical services, consultations, and call coverage, making a lasting impact on Native American communities in the region.
This is a Contract / Locum Tenens MD or DO opportunity in a mission-driven IHS hospital setting.

Position Highlights:
- Full-time schedule with inpatient, outpatient, and surgical duties
- Scheduled call coverage including weeknights, weekends, and holidays
- Long-term contract up to 6 months, with extension opportunities
- Must be Board Certified (or Board Eligible) in Orthopedic Surgery
- Minimum of 2 years post-residency orthopedic surgical experience required
- Prior IHS or locum tenens experience preferred
- Work authorized under any active, unrestricted U.S. medical license
- Open to both local and travel locum candidates
Orthopedic Surgeon Duties:
- Provide both inpatient and outpatient orthopedic care, including surgical and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions
- Perform common orthopedic procedures such as fracture care, arthroscopy, and joint-related surgeries
- Conduct pre-operative assessments and post-operative follow-up care
- Manage patient consultations and provide specialty guidance to primary care and ER physicians
- Participate in call coverage and respond to orthopedic emergencies and urgent consults
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the RPMS electronic health record system
- Collaborate with other healthcare providers across GIMC and surrounding IHS facilities
- Prescribe treatments and therapies consistent with privileges and hospital protocols
- Maintain compliance with quality assurance and performance improvement standards

Indian Preference Exercised:
Prairie Band, LLC is subject to Title 22: Employment Code of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In accordance with Title 22, this position is designated as a TIER 2 position. Preference will be given to individuals to the extent required pursuant to Section 22-2-4(B).
Requirements
- MD or DO degree from an accredited institution
- Active, full, and unrestricted U.S. medical license (state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory)
- Board Certification (or Board Eligibility) in Orthopedic Surgery
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- Current DEA license and prescribing eligibility
- Minimum of 2 years post-residency orthopedic surgical experience
- U.S. citizenship and primary residence within the United States
- Strong diagnostic, surgical, and clinical skills with excellent communication abilities
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems (RPMS experience preferred)
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity to Native American and Alaska Native populations
- Ability to pass a federal background check
