We are currently seeking a highly skilled and dedicated General Surgery Physician to join our dynamic Indian Health Service (IHS) team at Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. As a General Surgeon, you will provide both inpatient and outpatient surgical services, consultations, and call coverage while making a lasting impact on Native American communities in the region.
This is a Contract / Locums MD or DO opportunity within an IHS hospital setting.
- 8-hour shifts, Monday–Friday (7:30/8:00 a.m. – 4:00/4:30 p.m.)
- Full-time hours with scheduled call coverage (weeknights, weekends, holidays)
- Up to 1-year contract with potential extension options
- Must be Board Certified in General Surgery
- 2+ years of post-residency surgical experience required
- Prior IHS and/or locum tenens experience preferred
- Any active U.S. medical license accepted

General Surgeon Duties:
- Provide inpatient and outpatient surgical services (general “bread-and-butter” cases; excludes vascular surgery and C-sections).
- Conduct pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring high standards of patient safety.
- Manage an inpatient census of 3–6 patients, see 5–9 clinic patients per day, and perform 10–20 surgical cases monthly.
- Provide consultation services to other providers at GIMC and surrounding IHS service units.
- Participate in the peer review system and make practice adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the RPMS electronic medical record system.
- Prescribe medications and therapies in accordance with established privileges and policies.
- Ensure proper preparation for surgical cases, including necessary equipment and supplies.
- Take part in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Provide call coverage as scheduled, responding to emergencies and callbacks as required.

Indian Preference Exercised:
Prairie Band, LLC is subject to Title 22: Employment Code of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In accordance with Title 22, this position is designated as a TIER 2 position. Preference will be given to individuals to the extent required pursuant to Section 22-2-4(B).
Requirements
- Must be a licensed Physician MD or DO
- Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Must have current BLS, Basic Life Support certification
- Certification of Education - copy of diploma or transcripts
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
- DEA license and eligibility to prescribe medication
- Minimum of 2 years of Surgical experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Strong diagnostic, clinical, organizational and time-management skills
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems
- Must be a US citizen living primarily in the United States
- Willingness to comply with all state and federal regulations regarding medical practice
- must be willing to undergo a federal background check
