Description
We are seeking experienced, dedicated, and knowledgeable Contract Outpatient Pharmacists to join the healthcare team at the IHS Mescalero Service Unit Outpatient Pharmacy in Mescalero, NM. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the safe, effective, and culturally sensitive use of medications for our patients. This position requires a strong foundation in outpatient/ambulatory pharmacy practices, excellent communication skills, and a deep commitment to patient care. As a Pharmacist, you will work collaboratively with medical staff, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize therapy and improve patient outcomes.
Contract Details:
- Flexible long-term contract up to 1 year, with extension possibilities
- Outpatient Pharmacy hours:
- Monday thru Friday: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
- Day shift coverage
- No weekends, no Holidays
- 1099 Contract Role
- Can work off any State license
- Indian Health Services IHS - facility
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited pharmacy program/school
- Active state pharmacist license in the United States (any state license accepted)
- 2+ years of pharmacy experience required (outpatient or ambulatory care preferred)
- Previous contract experience a plus
- Previous Indian Health Service (IHS) or government facility experience highly desirable
- Must be willing and able to pass Federal Security Clearance pre-hire
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and interpret provider orders to ensure safe and appropriate medication therapy
- Accurately dispense medications and provide thorough patient counseling
- Conduct patient assessments and medication therapy management (MTM) to monitor efficacy and safety
- Support chronic disease state management, including diabetes, hypertension, and behavioral health conditions
- Manage outpatient pharmacy inventory, ensuring compliance with storage, security, and handling requirements
- Provide immunizations and patient education as appropriate
- Document interventions and maintain accurate electronic health records
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in an outpatient setting
Skills and Attributes:
- Strong background in outpatient/ambulatory pharmacy practices
- Proficiency with pharmacy software and electronic health records (EHR)
- Knowledgeable in medication safety, MTM, and chronic disease management protocols
- Familiarity with inventory management and regulatory compliance
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with patients, families, and healthcare staff

Requirements
- Be a graduate of an accredited pharmacy program/school
- Previous contract experience a plus
- Previous IHS facility experience helpful
- Hospital pharmacy experience preferred
- Have a Pharmacist degree from a school of pharmacy approved by a state-accrediting agency
- Possess a current, active, unrestricted license from any of the 50 Unites States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia.
- Maintain continuing education/certification
- Must be a US citizen, living primarily in the United States
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a pharmacist within the past 36 months,
- Must meet all credentialing and background investigation requirements.
